Whenever I’m working with children on set, there’s a moment where I realize I’m acting more like a birthday party clown than a director. Being a father of three has been good practice.

Set can be a daunting place for a kid. Give them an environment that supports them and celebrates them being there, and a more genuine performance ends up on screen.

There’s a lesson in it for working with adults too. Same foundation, different shape: respect their process, give them room to try things, let them fail and go again, get them feedback in time to use it. Instead of being their number one clown, be their number one fan.
